This is really big deal for tea shop owners who’ve a huge part of their wealth in pu erh tea. On September 16th, between 19:00 and 20:00, the water level in the Guangyuan Tea Distribution Center and the Guqiao Tea Street continued to rise, with the highest water level between 0.8 and 1 meter. This event follows the pu erh tea crash from just over a decade ago. A reporter of Mei Jing Wang news site reports: “If you close your eyes, you will be able to smell the rich tea in the Fangcun tea market in Guangzhou; if you open your eyes, you will see many tea house owners dumping the tea soaked in water.” The areas that suffered […]

Cheese Tea?? Give It a Try If You Haven’t Already! (With Recipe) https://helloteacup.com/2018/02/10/cheese-tea/ https://helloteacup.com/2018/02/10/cheese-tea/#comments Sat, 10 Feb 2018 11:54:48 +0000 http://helloteacup.com/?p=3601 I’m not sure if everyone noticed it, but cheese tea has been a hit among the young generation over the past few years. Here in China, if there’s a long queue on the street or in a mall, it’s most likely in front of a cheese tea shop. And what are people getting? Hashtag #SayCheeseTea! Apparently it’s also trending overseas like the US and the UK, and all over social media too. The Washington Post calls this drink the ‘Instagram worthy‘ food trend, while the the UK Independant newspaper says: “Cheese tea is a thing, and it’s coming to the UK“. It sounds strange, isn’t it? Why Starbucks Failed Badly To Make Teavana Enter Heaven https://helloteacup.com/2017/08/06/why-starbucks-failed-badly-to-make-teavana-enter-heaven/ https://helloteacup.com/2017/08/06/why-starbucks-failed-badly-to-make-teavana-enter-heaven/#respond Sun, 06 Aug 2017 08:10:13 +0000 http://helloteacup.com/?p=3241 During the end of 2012, Starbucks announced its acquisition of Teavana, a high-end retailer of loose leaf tea. The coffee chain dreamed big and announced in 2014 that it was ready to conquer the 90 billion dollar tea market. In 2016 the company also decided to accelerate the brand in Asia. Yet recently, Starbucks announced that it’s closing all its 379 Teavana stores. While most people who aren’t into tea might not find it strange, it came as a huge surprise for the tea community. See for example discussions on forums such as Reddit and Steepster. So what happened? Why did Starbucks fail so badly in making Teavana a big success? See below our analysis: 1. Tea Isn’t Coffee. Tea isn’t coffee. Yes, both beverages contain caffeine and are therefore often categorised together. Yet, it’s fair […]

Now every day can sell 200-300 pieces.” says Chen Feng Jiao who’s a owner of a perfume factory. The demand is now picking up quickly in South Korea and the Middle East region. Feng Jiao’s company is located outside the city Hengxiang, where she spend 20 years in traditional farming. The local keywords of success are ‘innovate’ and ‘return’. Innovation happens mainly in the supply chain space, by expanding into online sales channels such as eCommerce. At the same time, there’s this new demand for traditional jasmine products that used to be left behind in the past. People want to return to original small scale natural farming and jasmine products processed by hand. “Our online sales of tea accounted for more than 30% of total sales and with […]

When the coal economy was booming, the town had as many as 400 mines. More than 80% of rural revenue came from coal production and more than 3,000 people worked in the coal for a living Jiu’an. Less work is available today as there’s a large oversupply of coal. Mine workers have to look for opportunities in other industries, but are having a hard time. Li Jinying was one of them, but he eventually found is way in the world of tea. Li Jinyin graduated from junior high school in 1997, but because of poverty at home he stop any further education. He’d to quit school and follow his father’s footsteps as a coal mine worker. “Those years, we left home clean, but always came back with […]

It’s a green tea from the south of Hangzhou. Xinhua, China’s state news site reports today that severe drought this summer will result in a lower harvest next Spring, as expected by the city’s tea management office. Less output means higher prices. If you’re a longjing fan, we recommend to stock up and refrigerate a part of your stock for long-term use! China has lots of other tea regions that produce excellent green tea though. So perhaps next year is the time to start experimenting with new teas!

Tea Pets Movie Animation Trailer (2017) https://helloteacup.com/2017/07/21/tea-pets-movie/ https://helloteacup.com/2017/07/21/tea-pets-movie/#respond Fri, 21 Jul 2017 07:03:20 +0000 http://helloteacup.com/?p=3167 “Tea Pets” is a movie made by Gary Wang, who also directed “The Guardian Brothers”. The term “tea pets” refers to Chinese lucky charms, which are loved and collected by tea drinkers in China. Tea lovers who brew their tea in a traditional way, always ‘wake up’ the leaves by rinsing them in the first session. Tea resulting from this brew is always discarded. Because it’s a waste, tea drinkers generally pour them over these little tea pets on their tea table. It’s known that the more often you pour tea over them, the shinier they become! In the Tea Pets movie, these lucky charms come to life and embark on their own adventures.

These dominant companies have delivered great results to their shareholders, but their success is damaging the tea economy. In today’s market, it’s the winners that take it all and leave a mess for the rest to clean up. Without mentioning the brands, these firms have fantastic brands, great packaging and excellent service. Though it sounds great to consumers, there’s a downside. They’ve large bargaining power that allows them to drive down wages and increasing inequality. But that’s not it. These companies enjoy economies of scale and lobby with governments for subsidies, regulatory favours and tax breaks. And this highly prevents entrepreneurship. To reduce competition further, they acquire potential rivals to continue control the […]
