This brought the cumulative tea output from January to May to 195 million kilos against 127.9 million recorded in 2012. The facility, called The Chai Loan, will be a source of short term financing to both small-scale and large-scale tea farmers, to support farming operations critical to increased yields and revenues. Their program will also be providing financing to farmers,also collaborating with private tea processors to help support their out-growers. It is expected that an additional processing capacity of 60 million kilos of leaf a year will occur when those four newly licensed factories start operations. Sicily Kariuki, the managing director of the Tea Board of Kenya, said “The extra processing capacity will be available in the medium-term.
